In my first year of teaching, I was placed in a special education class for students with severe behaviors. I struggled to manage my class and was simply told to "figure it out." This was my dream job, but it didn't take long before I was overwhelmed, burned out, and questioning if this was for me.
But here's the happy ending: I figured out how to manage my class and learned how to handle the really tough behaviors!
With nearly 30 years in the field, including 10 years teaching students with challenging behaviors, I became a district behaviorist and helped create award-winning programs. I've presented nationally and internationally on classroom management and challenging behaviors, training and mentoring both general and special education teachers.
